The Shoemaker s Dream: A Book Review and Discussion Guide

Martin then dreams, and hears the Lord promising to come to him. The next day, the shoemaker encounters several people in need whom he assists. Later that evening, the Lord speaks to Martin in the darkness, repeatedly saying "Is is I," and at each of these instances the faces of the people Martin had helped that day are brought to his mind. Based on Matthew 25:31-46 regarding how our Christian faith should lead us to help those in need, Tolstoy's story highlights the truthfulness of Jesus' words from this passage: "Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me" (25:40).

Luca Guadagnino is back to tell the origins of famed shoemaker Salvatore Ferragamo with Salvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams. A new trailer for the documentary teases how the humble Italian shoemaker became a fashion icon, rising to prestige in Hollywood as a master of comfort and style. After sitting on the shelf since its 2020 world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, the film is expected to arrive from Sony Pictures Classics later this year.

The Shoemaker s Dream

In California he refused to work for others shoemakers. His brothers suggested that they contact the American Film Company instead. They did so, and a company manager explained a problem they had with the quality and style of cowboy boots provided by a manufacturer located in a distant city. Ferragamo instantly landed the position to make custom boots for movie sets.

I do not know whether my diplomas and honorary degrees entitle me to write a string of letters after my name; I do not care. The longer I have lived the greater has been my satisfaction and pride that I am a shoemaker. Even today if anyone calls me by any other title I am annoyed.

Irked by the shoddiness of machine-made shoes but concerned about the financial viability of handmade production, Ferragamo decided on a novel notion: mass production of handmade shoes. He would hire dozens of novice shoemakers who learned their craft from him. Because such artisans dwelled in Italy, he decided to return. But in his effort to recruit craftsmen, this novel notion met an icy reception. As he wrote:

The excellent story within Shoemaker of Dreams deserves to be reprinted. In the preface, Ferragamo dismisses his own story as an Italian shoemaker as being the least important aspect of the book, and instead highlights the importance of footwear to healthy feet.

Shoemaker of Dreams turns out to be an enchanting, endearing and almost fairy tale-like telling of a child prodigy with big dreams. What, of course, is so peculiar is that the term prodigy is not exactly synonymous with a profession such as shoe making, and yet Salvatore Ferragamo was just that.

In the early 20th century, impoverished teenage Italian cobbler Salvatore Ferragamo sailed from Naples to America to seek a better life. He settled in Southern California, and became Hollywood's go-to shoemaker during the silent era. In 1927, he returned to Italy and founded in Florence his namesake luxury brand. This feature-length documentary recounts his adventures.

By remediating various archival images and interviewing Ferragamo's family, Guadagnino presents the Italian shoemaker's life as a pure gospel. The viewer's urged to believe every word s/he hears since the analysed persona lacks dramatic nuance - Ferragamo's immensely talented, and he doesn't even need to learn anything from anyone about shoemaking because he inherently knows it. And until the Wallstreet crisis, nothing actually seems to harm his career. What about his troubles when he arrived in the US, and when he searched for clients? The film's educational purpose is hence predominantly lost; if the viewer's an aspiring shoemaker, s/he would like to know the problems that might be faced. 2ff7e9595c
